Braving the elements.

The stubbornness pays off sometimes. I was contemplating the snow-covered roads this morning and decided to try and get to David Keil's Mysore anyway. I made it in twice the time my Tomtom calculated, but made it there nevertheless. It was good that there were no cars on the roads, because my car moved like it was driven by a drunk. Turned out I was the only one in 6:00 time slot who ventured out and had a nice private session as a result. How cool is that? I have never had that much attention paid to my practice and we uncovered lots of little things I can improve on. For example, gripping my buttocks in updog is apparently not good for the lower back, so we worked on that. I was still doing my practice when 7:30 people slowly trickled in. David helped me with the dropbacks - standups. For the dropbacks he made me do them with arms up, which is a completely unfamiliar territory for me. Lots of fear to work on.

The way back was very adventurous. My car stalled on one of the hills and then started sliding back, while there were several cars behind me. They had to swerve around me, and then zipped up like there was no hill. Very unnerving. My commute to work took 1h45min instead of calculated 26 minutes, but at least I made it there in one piece.

I am so looking forward for tomorrow's Mysore! Do not remember the last time I felt like that about my practice. Whoo-hoo! :)

I'm so happy to hear you're excited about your practice again! How great that you get him for the whole week, and not just the weekend. So nice to have a different perspective on the practice.

Your attitude towards a snow day is admirable. I take the life-is-too-short-to-get-out-in-that-crap approach, I'm impressed you bear it so well!

Hi Alfia,

...been reading your blog for ages but never comment. Thought I'd chime in today. I live in Florida and have been practicing with David Keil for a few years...he's one of my all time favorite teachers! Enjoy working with him this week!

Hi, Alin:

Thank you for your kind words. The crappy weather is not too uncommon here, so we would miss on a lot of stuff if we stay in every time.
It is great to have a different perspective. Especially from a teacher with a great eye for anatomy.

Thank you for reading and for chiming in. I see how David can be an all time favorite very easily. I am extremely excited about this week!

I've been working on hands-overhead dropbacks, too. I'd be curious to hear if David explained why he wanted you to do them that way?

Hi, Anna and Tova:

I miss you too! Anna, do you still plan to come for cherry blossom festival?

Hi, Karen:

David claims that lifting arms up elongates the body and prevents slumping into the lower back. But I still feel a lot of pressure on my lower back when I go down with arms overhead. I do not feel anything bad when I do it my usual way - with hands along the body. So now it hurts to go both ways - up and down. I am not sure what is the deal here.

Arturo, the weather here went totally crazy. 16-20 during the day, and the temperature actually drops as the day progresses. So much for March. How is the weather in Shangai?

Practice was really good. I learned chakrasana for the first time, so excited. But then I had to go home because of some kind of intestinal disturbance (i seem to get a lot of thise lately), so I am home, replenishing fluids (peppermint tea) and preparing for the class tonight. I hope this thing will not prevent me from pracitcing tomorrow.

oh no! poor thing.

Ooh, poor Alfia. Speaking of intestinal disturbances, there's one going around, here. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't catch it. Feeling better, yet?

alfia said...

Hi, JS! So good to hear from you.

I do not think my disturbance has an infectious nature. I have a suspicion (long ingnored and self-denied) that I am sensitive to garlic. Had an excellent salsa yesterday, and today my stomach is very unhappy. I often denied myself garlic because of the smell, but now I think I have to cut it out completely. Sigh...

I might miss the cherry blossoms because I can't come down until mid-April, but I will be there (and will see you) then for sure!

Hope you had a great day!

hi Alfia
the weather here was rainy all last week. this week is expected to be cloudy with some rain. it's been down to 39. the highs are around 45, 50 if the sun comes out.

Alfia, regarding the garlic, it may be a temporary thing. i used to think that i could neither take garlic nor onions. and now i can eat them without trouble, cooked in soups.

cheers,
Arturo
