Eating out is scary.

For lunch my lab decided to go out to California tortilla place, one of the favorites in the area. I tagged along and gave in when we were there - got myself a regular vegetarian burrito with spinach, chips and salsa. Ate a half of the burrito, but finished the chips, because salsa was outstanding. Back to work I discovered that California tortilla had a very nice nutritional calculator on its website. I looked up my lunch and nearly fainted. My half burrito and chips amounted to 858 calories, 25% calories coming from fat; plus double daily dose of salt. My stomach feels the weight of the food even now, an hour after lunch and a 30 min walk back to work. I think, I satisfied my craving for cooked food for a long time now. The salad choices were not much better from the nutritional point of view, either.

This Sunday I am going to Minneapolis, MN for a week-long immunology training. It is going to be grueling - 8 hours a day of lectures, with small breaks here and there. I did not find a studio with Mysore practice there on-line, please correct me if I am wrong. I think I will splurge on illegal intermediate series practice at my hotel. They also have an Olympic-size pool there, so I better not forget my swimming suit.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I don't know if you'll have a car while you're there, but there's a studio close to Minneapolis in Edina and they teach Mysore style.

sounds VERY familiar...the last time we ate at our favorite burrito joint..Chipolte..and we looked the vegie burrito up online...the sodium content was so high we Never went back. my husband figured it had to be the salsa...but he makes the Best burritos in the world, so that problem got solved rather quickly to say the least!! :0)

Hi, Kai and Anon:

Thank you for your input. I will not have a car, unfortunately, so these studios are not quite close enough. I might drop into one of them in the evening, though, for a vinyasa class. My training starts at 7:30 daily, followed by hours and hours of lectures, so I am sure my body will appreciate a wicked vinyasa class afterward!

Hi, Tracy:

Like you, I decided to never go there again, and I will probably include Chipotle into the list as well. The numbers of calories, fat and sodium in their foods are just obscene. I still feel the stupid burito in my belly!

oh, alfia! i totally empathize! it's interesting that for me, the scary thing is that i worry that one unplanned day of deviation from 811rv will trigger subsequent events of "bad" eating. :-\ and so i've kind of just been a hermit, which isn't necessarily a good thing either! i've gotten to a point where i'm ok bringing my 1/2 watermelon with me to meetings with my mentor if he decides to hold it at my lunch hour (in fact he offered to bring in some for me from his garden!). but i still haven't figured out the whole "eating out" thing.

as far as your trip... from my limited experience, i've found that a low calorie diet won't sustain me. is there any way you can get bananas to eat during the day? or some other easily portable fruit like apples?

don't beat yourself up over the burrito and chips. did you enjoy eating them while you were eating them? i hope so!!! and you will hop right back on to eating fruits and veggies now, having satisfied your cooked craving as you said. i don't know if it'd work for you, but i do allow myself one day a week to deviate from 811rv and it's definitely kept me quite happy. maybe eventually i'll be 100% and maybe i won't. but right now this is what works for me.

we'll miss you while you're gone! <3

Rayna, we were leaving comments in each others blogs at the same time! So funny.

I am taking with me a lunch box and plan to bring lots of friut with me. It does not bother me at all to eat during the lectures. Too few calories give me a headache. I do not need more headaches in addition to those I will get from immunology! :D

I did not enjoy my burrito, to tell you the truth. I think I ma cure of the mexican food cravings. Except for salsa though. Mmmm, that was soe good salsa.

Rayna, to tell you the truth, I eat cooked meals at least every other day. I steam artichokes, asparagus and broccoli. I also steam sliced eggplant and then simmer it in tomatoes, no oil added. There is just something about hot food that I miss terribly, so I indulge myself in those. They are a good source of nutrition, so I do not feel terribly guilty about them.

I will miss you guys, too!

At least when you eat cooked it's healthy! When I deviate from 811 I really deviate! Haha! I'm so envious that you'll have access to an Olympic-sized pool. Those are hard to come by and 25 meter pools give all of two strokes before you have to flip around. (^_^)

Alfia, that's terrible about the burrito! I mean, I'm not a big calorie counter or raw food person, but I understand the horror of finding out something I just ate was way worse than I ever could have imagined.

You pretty much have to go to trusted restaurants (usually locally owned) to avoid getting crap food in the guise of healthy or normal. Portion size is obnoxious now- and I like to eat a lot, so that's saying a lot for me to make that statement!

I like Rayna's idea of allowing a day to "cheat"- so the pressure doesn't feel too heavy. Good luck on your travels!

hi Alfia
have fun! yes, mexican food can be heavy and salty, particularly the tortillas. salsa is a healthy food, though. some people eat it with a spoon by itself. (maybe i should try that instead of peanut butter, hehe)
hugs
Arturo
