Supta vajrasana.

A combination of being fat and having T.Rex-like arms is not conducive for successful supta vajrasana. I need at least 3 additional inches of the arm length. Or lose 14-20 pounds. It seems that former is easier somehow.

Still no time to blog or read, but there is light in the end of the tunnel. And boy, it is beautiful outside! Trees are blooming, birds are chirping. We survived the winter!

Alfia!!!

GET A GRIP, you are not fat. Unless you've been chowing down on burgers, fries, and milkshakes since your last post, I'm not allowing you to use the "I'm fat" excuse, okay? You look great!

Laghu is hard for many body types, I think you're just going to have to suck it up like the rest of us and get some leg strength and work on opening up the front of your body. I know. It's more fun to blame it on short arms, but... the Excuse Police is here to tell you, that ain't the problem.

And, let me add, I'm not a fan of the pose either and learning it made me scream obscenities out loud in our peaceful shala (for which I got in trouble for). There are still days when I'm on my 5th breath thinking, "am I going to make it up today?!"

Good luck!! Enjoy spring!

Hi, Liz:

You are right, I need to get a grip. Especially on those sweaty toes...
I might be not fat from a conventional point of view, but I am not "yoga normal" at the moment. Having a crunch upon crisis on top of a deadline, I gained 14 pounds from last October. Bye-bye a wrist bind in MariD, as well as a bind in supta kurmasana on my own. David actually said it straight out that all that junk on my back does not help matters at all. Like I did not know. Sigh...

Anyway, question - where does the leg strength come to play? My lotus is not bad and knees are pretty close to each other. Do I need to squeeze them more while in the pose?

Thank you for Excuse Policing me, Liz. I need it!

Mwah!

Your "junk"... HA!!!
I know what you mean by "yoga fat", just don't be too hard on yourself. Life ebbs and flows and so does the practice.

I'm a dufus. I'm obviously only half way paying attention... I was describing Laghuvadrasana, not Supta Vaj!! ha ha ha!!!!!! No wonder you were confused about leg strength. oh wow. The Excuse Police may need to shut her mouth.

Supta Vaj. Not easy, either. I have no tips other than practice. ha ha! Is that an annoying tip, or what.

Excuse my attention span- I'm a little nuts right now myself. Carry on.

No problem Liz! I bet leg strength is involved somehow in SV. You just do not quite realize the depth of your insight yet. :)

Alfia!

You looked fantastic the other morning. It's been so long... :)

Couple things that have really helped me with SV:

Really getting the thighs straight out / and feet in when going into padmasana.

Lifting up and out of the pelvis, bandhas key here.

When going for the bind, use the posterior illiac spine as a bit of a lever. This seems to really force the elbows to be crossed and also helps lock in the bind.

At least this is how Kino broke it down for me back in December. :)

HAHAHA!! Oh, I know the feeling. Good advice from Portside.

Nice to hear from you, and isn't spring wonderful?

Thank you, Portside! Helpful tips, though finding PIS under the love handles was, ummm, interesting. :D

Hi, Susan! Good to hear from you, too. Can't wait for the semester to be over so I could return to the blogworld again. Miss you all!

Hi Alfia!

Hang in there...the end of the semester is almost here!

I used to feel like my arms were too short in supta vaj too...some days I still do.
I found my way in to the pose on one particularly warm day when my elbows were sweaty enough to slide over one another. It was just the couple inches I needed!
Maybe try spritzing the arms down with water one day if you're feeling stuck! Good Luck!

Oh, David also wraps a towel around my toes so my hands don't slide off...that helps too!

Hi, Christine! Missed your comment entirely - sorry!

David Keil was the one who introduced me to the pose back in October last year. He used a towel trick with me, too. The pose worked just fine then and I thought I would have no problems with it at all. But then I was 14 pounds lighter...

Thank you for the tips - I will try spritzing my arms next time. It will add to my collection of the poses I used a spritzer for - supta kurmasana, garba pindasana and now supta vajrasana. :)

Liz - see, a little bit of whining goes a long way. How else would I get that many excellent tips? :D

You are getting a lot of advice! I didn't think about the slippery arm thing. When I'm drenched in sweat, I really crank them so I can get my elbows crossed higher up.

now... just to be clear, your teacher didn't actually say "that junk on your back" did he? Part of me loves him if he did (seriously, who is that honest these days), but part of me is horrified! I'm hoping it was either egged on by you, or you translated it into something funnier for our sake.

Hi, Liz:

I do not remember the exact words, but the meaning was unmistakable. David is very direct and not politically correct. I guess he takes into account emotional stability and he does not abuse his directness.I really like him, no matter what. :)
