The benefits of chemical modifications of the body.

I went to practice yesterday after taking Theraflu a night before. Practice was good, though I felt a little shaky from weakness. Yesterday I did not take any meds and woke up incredibly stuffed up. Now, how do people practice if they can't breathe through the nose? I had a light home practice and my sinuses cleared up after all sun salutations, but I had to blow my nose after every single one of them. Disgusting. Now I am wondering, should I take anything tonight to be able to practice at the shala tomorrow, or I will recover sufficiently to go drug-free? Hmmm...

The weather is amazing - a little cool, but in a nice, crisp and sunny sort of way. I hope I will be able to go for a short walk after lunch today. I am trying a walking meditation again, and it goes so well when it is beautiful outside.

Happy Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday!

Last week when my nose was totally stuffed up, I did a home practice where I breathed through my MOUTH... yes it was gross; but I noticed something. I think I might have a deviated septum! The left nostril always seems to be drawing less air than the right side, even when I'm not sick. A lot less air. I think I might have a problem.

When I breathed through my mouth I felt I was getting so much oxygen and was so strong! It felt good, except for the gross dry mouth.

I wonder if the French system will pay for me to "re-make the nose", as they put it.

Hope you're feeling better!

you could try neti pot. you'll get some pretty nasty stuff out, but you'll feel tons better afterwards! in fact, we do "baby neti" for ananda too (just saline washes as recommended by the pediatrician) and he is much happier afterwards (though totally unhappy during the ordeal). also, talk with june - she is seeing kelly for allergies. might be worth a shot. more expensive than over the counter drugs, but an alternative nonetheless. hope you feel better soon!!

Hi, Rayna:

I use neti pot, though when I am completely blocked, nothing goes through. Perhaps I am not using it right? It is not allergies at the moment, but the remnants of the cold bug I had this weekend. Thank you for reminding me, though - I will try the pot tonight!
Oh, btw, do you ever use it before practice? If I do it in the morning, some of the saline gets trapped somewhere, and then releases when I am in downdog. Extremely embarrassing!

I use it every day before practice. For me, consistency was key. Using it every day keeps everything nice and open. Now, it's like brushing my teeth... no big deal at all.

i have yet to acquire aliya's good habit, but i do tongue scrape every morning. i know, that has nothing to do with you sinus...

Feel better Alfia!!

The sinus thing seems tougher to get through this year for some reason...I had issues like never before a couple of weeks ago!

PS My OTC choice was Afrin 12 hour spray for a few days. I hate taking anything but this did indeed help me get through practice and also to sleep better!
I never ingest the decongestants...they make me feel horrible.

Wow! you all are hard core! If I'm sick (which, fortunately rarely happens), I don't practice. A nice home practice does sound like a good remedy, though- you're free to blow away, drip, cough up what's needed, etc. ew!

I'm laughing at the comments, they're striking me as funny for some reason.

Joy Suzanne, I can't believe you got more oxygen through your mouth! Interesting. I'm so addicted to the ujjayi breath I think it would make me mad. I think there would be a lot of sighing!

Hope you feel better Alfia!

Hi Alfia,

I do hope you are feeling better.

Even when I am ill, I find that if I can find the energy and motivation to do a little practice,I always feel better.
