Sunchokes do not go well with yoga

Because of the high glycemic index, I banished potatoes from my house completely, which caused much anguish on my husband's part. Russian cuisine generally consists of three combinations: meat and potatoes; meat and dough; and meat and rice. Which makes potatoes a very large component. So I tried sunchokes yesterday, because some people claim they are a very good substitute. I fried them Russian-style, and they do look a lot like potatoes. Not so much in taste, but it was not bad either. I have discovered the downside of this substitution this morning, though. I woke up so gassy that the question of going to Mysore was not even considered for the fear of being banished from the place forever. After a short google research, I discovered that sunchokes have a high levels of inulin, which makes them particularly attractive to diabetics. But is causes bloating (temporarily, they claim), which makes them incompatible with yoga. I had to settle for a home practice, which wasn't bad if one does not take into account that the cats were traumatized occasionally....

You guys are funny!
Tova, there was no hiding it. You should have seen the indignation on my cats faces...

if i happened to fart in class i would certainly blame my neighbor :) you might reconsider practicing next to me in the future S!
well, hopefully you will back to normal tomorrow Alfia!

Nah, if I fart in class I claim it, baby!

Tova, how do you blame the neighbor? Every time an accident happens you point your finger and yell "It's him, it's him"? :D

I will certainly be back tomorrow. I am feeling OK at work, a little round at the belly level, but nothing unmanageable. :)

No way, much more subtle than that....you kind of glance around, wrinkle your nose a bit, maybe rub at it. Then subtly stare at the neighbor you've decided to blame. Hopefully people will see that and blame them too.

OMG, this is hilarious! I need to practice this technique. Just because it is so deliciously devious.
:D
Thank you, Sonya! Learned something new, not a wasted day, after all.

Farting Elvis used to TORTURE us at Yoga Sutra. His were silent but deadly, and always smelled like digested Mexican food.

Funny but I ate pork sausage for dinner Sat night & had a gallon of red wine & then had an UNUSUALLY open 2nd series the next morning. I'm sure not many yogis would tout sausage (unless it's the sexy time kind) for flexibility :)

Pork sausage and a gallon red wine for flexibility - check! Should try it. I am not big on pork, though. Muslim family upbringing.

My friend Nako asked me if I was burping it all night after like she was. Nope. But then she continued on, out, and I went home & went to sleep.

after the one day D came by spraying airfreshener in between me and kelly, i always tell him he smells bad. i would totally blame a fart on him.

alfia said...

Kelly can take it, he is strong. (and handsome, too) :)
I remember that air freshener! D. is brutal sometimes, isn't he? I love him nevertheless.

crankyhausfrau said...

he certainly can be. but he has a good heart :)

The one and only time I ate sunchokes the same thing happened to me. I'm glad to hear it's not just me ;-)

hi Alfia
can you take Beano? it seems to help with gas. there's also beanzyme, a cheaper, over the internet version of the same.

on a flight back to SF on Thanksgiving weekend, there was a Felvis in the plane. a lot of people were affected. it was as bad as a high school prank.

hugs
Arturo

OMG, I laughed so hard at that story of D and the air spray! He's just priceless :)

i couldn't stop thinking about farting during class today :P

Hi, Yogamum:
You made me feel much better! I also thought that I was alone in this predicament.

Hello, Arturo:

I do not believe that Beano would help. It inhibits a very particular enzyme, and is helpful while eating beans. But with inulin - who knows...
Having said that, I need to admit that I did take Beano in the morning and lots of GasX without any visible (or smellable) results.

Hello Alfia and merry christmas to you.

Funny story :)

Have you any experience with sweet potatoes? In spite of the name and the look, they're not potatoes. I've read that they have lower carb even if they taste much sweeter than ordinary potatoes.

Hi, Monica:

Thank you for stopping by.
We eat sweet potatoes once in a while, never got used to them. They have a GI of 56, which is not bad, but not great either. And you are right, they have nothing in common with potatoes! I miss potatoes...
