No fun in being sick anymore

So yesterday was a combination of a drug-induced blur with a flurry of activity. I slept probably 6 or 8 hours in small increments during the day; but also did my taxes, laundry, cooking, a thousand of headstands and took my son to the airport. His spring break is over, and I am going to miss my baby!
I discovered for the first time in my life that the inversions help with the stuffed nose. Especially a headstand. I think I vastly improved it for my practice because I had to do it every hour or so. After the headstand I could blow my nose, use a neti pot and then nasya oil. Then breathing bliss for 40 or so minutes and the whole thing had to be repeated again. I am not sure how the headstand affected the rest of my body, but I felt like shit. Feverish, achy all over, and low on energy. No appetite either.
This morning I did an abbreviated practice at home, which left me panting. Have to go to work, unfortunately. Need to pick up my poster and print out everything for the trip, teach my class, have pictures taken for the work permit, pick up my husband for the airport, talk to a friend about taking care of our cats while we are away, and pack our bags. The flight to San Francisco is tomorrow at 6 am. Thank God I am no stranger to waking up early!

Now, I remember the times when being sick meant staying leisurely in bed, being treated with tea and chicken soup and lots of loving care. What happened to those old good times? Why am I in a headstand again?!

If you ever have to fly with a cold & get the blocked ear thing - headstand will cure it. I flew to the Dominican Republic once & had a really painful landing cause of the ear thing. Felt like someone had poured concrete in my ears. Muffled. Makes you CRAZY, that feeling. The first thing I did when I got to my room on the ship (cruise) was a 10m headstand. Fixed me!

I love headstands, but I still believe that homemade chicken soup with lots of noodles cures any illness.

Hope you feel better soon! Have a wonderful flight!

Good morning, Linda!

I am a firm believer in healing powers of headstand now. I think I can do 5 min, since I was upside down forever yesterday. But it is good to know it has this additional power! I have pain in my ears on landing even when I am not sick. Thank you! :)

Hi, Anna!

Yeah, chicken soup. Need to go and get one from the cafeteria. Not the same, though...

Thank you! Healing vibes to your poor paw, too :)

Back when I was working on strengthening, I'd do self practices at home (this is WAY before I discovered Astanga) with a 5m headstand to start. Then a minute rest. Then I'd do, I can't quite remember now, maybe four more versions of headstand with one minute rest in between - body building strategy applied to yoga. I made a little routine for myself, referencing the Iyengar book...

I loves me my inversions.

And of course a good chicken soup is wonderful. Have you got any Jewish delis near you?

I think I am falling in love with the inversions as well. It was not the case not long ago! The are pluses to being sick, too! :D

No jewish delis around. Nothing but a stupid hospital cafeteria, unhealthy and overpriced. I normally bring my food with me, beacause I hate cafeteria food.

Are you a nurse? Doctor?

alfia said...

Nope, I am a researcher. I have a PhD in Neuroscience. :)

Oh how interesting! Wow. I am always fascinated by Astangis with "real" jobs. Am wondering how much education is required for something like that.

alfia said...

Let's see, 4 years of college and 6 years of graduate school. Could be worse.
How come your job is not real? When I saw a "designer" on your profile, I thought "Wow, how glamorous"! :D

Ooh that's a lot. I'd love to have a masters but just because I enjoy learning so much. If I had some windfall, I'd go back to school and get one in figurative sculpture. Just because. I wonder if I could minor in Sanskrit too...

Well I'm just a hired gun freelancer. I've got a lot of unused, fine art talent. Pays the bills. I haven't raised my rate in 3 years though & everything's going up, up, up. Plus I should have health insurance.

Can't get back in that damned box though. And yes I'm going to run off to India again.

Being a scientist does not pay much either. I think it is just the curiosity that drives me. Which does not prevent me from wanting to escape to Himalayas once in a while.
You should utilize your artistic talents! There are a rare commodity, you know. YOu just need to find a driven business partner.

I know... I'd like to paint again someday. Happily painting is not an ageist pursuit. If I live to an old age, I'll do it then hopefully.

You do not have much of a chice, than to live a long, long, long life. Why do we do asanas otherwise? Not to sit comfortably in meditations, right? :D

To be happy in one's own skin??? I've gotta say I LOVE living inside this body of mine.

I'm one of my unreasonably good moods today. I'm sure you noticed!!!

I just want to do happy chair dance.

My endorphin high has worn off & I'm now in crash mode. But it IS 2:30...

Me thinks I'll leave by 4:30 at the latest.

alfia said...

Oh, no! Is there a place to take a headstand to replenish endorphins?
:)

Boodiba said...

Sadly, no... I may hang off the edge of my half cube...

I am now dreaming about my boyfriend the bathtub. :)

I suppose the crash might be worse in light of those two, straight-up Ketel One martinis I swilled last night.

:D Imagined you hanging off...

If you massage the points where your eyebrows start (close to the nose) it will give you a little jolt of energy. Sadly, not for a long time...

I tried it, but while it felt good, nothing much happened. Is ok. Day is nearly over.

i don't think you get the tea and chicken soup treatment unless you are child or a husband/partner/boyfriend!
i hope you feel better soon!

i have a dear friend from college who is a neuroscience person. she went by way of medical school and now does stroke research and care.

I like to set up six blocks, three on either side of my head to hold up my shoulders, plop up against a wall, and hang out in headstand without effort for long periods of time when I am that congested. Lovely!

Boodi, a while back I bought one of those headstand machines to keep at the office, from ageeasy.com. It's a stool that you take part of the cushion off and then it looks like a toilet seat. You can then put your head in and voila! do a headstand if you need a boost while at work.
cheers, arturo

Hi Arturo!! I could do one anywhere really without any equipment, but there's only barely enough room in my half cube for me & my chair...
